All you need to know about Après Ski

Après ski literally means ‘after ski’ in French. However, believe it or not après ski was born in Norway. In the 19th century the Norwegians started to celebrate with after ski parties on their mountains consisting of drinking alcohol and dining potatoes, not so different to the après ski nowadays.

From Norway, the idea expanded to the Alps, to the USA and even Canada. Firstly, it was the hotel organizing this party for the guests to enjoy after their day on the slopes and for the ski instructors to socialize with their pupils after a day of ski lessons.

Nowadays it is a must in every ski resort you go to. There is no ski without après ski, and there is no après ski without ski. Both come together on a ski holiday, and both are essential.

But what exactly is après ski?

Après ski, is any kind of activity you do after skiing. It usually refers to socializing activities, such as warming up in front of a fireplace with a group of friends and a bottle of wine, or dancing under the DJ vibes on a ski bar terrace. Après ski is a way to meet people, to share your slope tales, and to hydrate yourself after a hard workout on the mountain.

It doesn't matter where you go there will always be something happening après ski. From massive festivals such as Tomorrowland Winter Festival in Alp D Huez, live music concerts such as Top of the Mountain Concert at Ischgl or a relaxed glass of champagne with a mountain view at Moet Bar Baqueira.

Après ski is officially the time from when you are done skiing until dinner time. Unofficially, it can last as long as you are keen to continue.

What to wear? The good thing about apres ski is that you can wear whatever you want! There is no time to lose so just jump straight into the bar from the slopes, so you don't miss the best beats.

As après ski takes place in the mountains, it's important that you don't feel cold, so you better keep your ski outfit on. You don't want to look boring? Plan your après ski outfit in the morning and get a fancy dress to shine in the bar. Even if you might be excited to take your ski boots off, we are sorry to tell you that apres ski usually takes place with your ski boots on, as they will help you avoid slippery ice falls with a few too many beers.

How to choose my fancy dress for après ski?

As we want to keep ourselves warm and even if we wish, we don’t recommend you wear a Hawaiian tropical outfit on the mountain for an après ski party. Ski Outfits have come to the early years, going back to retro to share the vibes in the apres ski atmosphere. Bright colors, one pieces, old school designs and retro accessories are the perfect match for your retro fancy dress.
